The memorandum further strives to illuminate what we mean by academic freedom and why this principle is of such fundamental importance for research and furthering knowledge.

The memorandum also examines how academic freedom is interpreted and the pressure it is coming under in universities and colleges and in the institute sector, and ultimately considers the issue of freedom of research in health trusts and the Archives, libraries and museums sector.
